Shine just a little brighter! My wardrobe tends to air on the side of sparkly. More often than not at least one piece in my outfit will have some sort of gleam to it. Whether it be this metallic skirt, a statement necklace, shimmer shoes, or a fierce sequin jacket… I love to have some shine to add the final touch to the masterpiece of an outfit I craft!

Today I want to talk to you about something that is a question I often receive in the Christian community being in fashion + wearing sparkly, stand out clothing. Is it okay to wear sparkles? I recently completed an interview with my dearest roomie + most beloved sister/bestie, Jessica Chow [check out her Youtube channel here!]. She challenged me with a series of questions regarding faith in fashion + man oh man was it ever so lovely to be challenged openly to speak truth about fashion, its meaning + how to take part in this art form in a beautiful, selfless way.

Statement dress is spoken about in a few places in the Bible:

“Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire “[1 Timothy 2:9]

…and then again in 1 Peter, “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.” [1 Peter 3:3-4]

SO, let’s just dive right into this one… [as I dive off of my chair into the abyss- ha!]. To be honest, this question is one that is SO important to me + one that I have thought and prayed about quite a bit. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 it states “Your body is a temple of the holy spirit within you” + it goes onto say “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body”. To me, this verse spans so many areas of our lives, but as it relates to fashion I love to bring up this verse. To me, the question truly comes back to a root issue of women respecting themselves + loving their bodies. As it states in Corinthians 6, we are urged to treat our body as a temple. A temple is a holy place that is sacred + precious. Just like that, so are our bodies. Therefore, when it comes to dressing our bodies, it comes down to loving ourselves, respecting ourselves, + clothing our bodies in a means that reflect love + respect. Similarly, without clothes our bodies are beautiful, but being without clothes is extremely intimate + private. That is something I wish to only share with my future husband. As such, I would not want to dress in a way that reveals those intimate parts of myself. I love + respect myself in such a way that I want to honor God through my body and also show love and respect to myself + my body. *LIGHT BULB MOMENT!*

In tandem to this, if we are adorning ourselves in flashy attire to be recognized or to stand out, we must question our hearts place for the desire to drawn attention to ourselves in this fashion [pun intended!].. Ultimately, it comes down to an issues of the heart. I dress in pieces that have sparkle because I simply love the art of sequin dressing. I love the texture + glimmer that metallics add to an outfit creating so much more dimension + interest. To me fashion is an art form, + therefore putting on sparkles is not a means to attract attention, but rather a way to perfectly finish an artful piece of work with the final touch… just like an artist would do when finishing an amazing piece of artwork. So with that I challenge you to consider, what is your intention behind what you choose to wear? I mean truly… what is your REAL intention? Dig deep here, + ask yourself why you may choose to wear certain things over others. I still do it, CONSTANTLY. It is vital, + can be extremely eye opening.

This is really only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a discussion of this nature regarding how fashion + faith collide. I LOVE this conversation + am so open to speaking more about it with you lovelies, that is why I want to extend the invite to freely email me if you want to continue this conversation. Please contact me at! I would be MORE than happy to speak with you further about the importance of dressing in a way that also shows love to ourselves.
